Ethics Series — Ethics, Political Parties and Campaigns: What Standards Should We Demand?
Ethics requires applying standards of right and wrong to actions: with a Federal election underway many ask what ethical norms should guide our parties as they compete for support?
In recent days, for example, the Liberal Party attacked statements by the Conservative leader on health but ignored context and qualifiers with Twitter subsequently applying the label “manipulated media” to the Liberal video. The Ontario Conservative party sent out a fundraising letter with the bold title of “Invoice,” which it clearly was not, and had to withdraw the appeal. All of our parties collect and use personal data, but the parties have exempted themselves from the standards of the Privacy Act which apply to governments and corporations.
Panellists:
- Monika Le Roy — Senior Advisor to the Organization of American States
- Sheila Gervais — Former National Director of the Liberal Party of Canada
- Cam Galindo — Massey Junior Fellow and School Board Trustee
- Tom Axworthy — Massey Senior Fellow and Public Policy Program Chair (moderator)
